A little history about our fair neighborhood
Located to the west of Georgetown, Capitol Hill is Washington’s oldest neighborhood. In its early days, the majority of residents were members of Congress who resided in boarding houses and dormitories surrounding the Capitol. As the neighborhood evolved, row houses replaced boarding houses, and the Hill began to develop into a neighborhood filled with families and Washington’s elite. As you traverse this stately neighborhood, be prepared to encounter familiar faces, as several senators and representatives reside here. In addition to the U.S. Capitol, the Hill encompasses other notable American landmarks, including the U.S. Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Union Station, the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks, the Washington Naval Yard, Congressional Cemetery, Lincoln Park, and the Eastern Market. All of these attractions are conveniently accessible within walking distance, with most being Metro-accessible. Situated just down the hill from the Capitol lies the National Mall, renowned for its iconic monuments and memorials, as well as over 10 museums and galleries showcasing art and artifacts. To the east of the Capitol lies the Eastern Market, one of the few remaining merchant markets in Washington. During the week, the market experiences a surge in activity, but it truly comes alive on weekends when residents and visitors from diverse backgrounds flock to savor breakfast, procure fresh meats, produce, and breads, explore the adjacent flea market, and peruse the latest art and jewelry creations by local artists and artisans. During the spring and summer months, a visit to the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks at 8th and I Streets SE provides an opportunity to witness the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team in action. This 24-man rifle platoon executes precise maneuvers with their 10.5 lb M-1 Garand rifles, equipped with fixed bayonets.
At the U.S. Capitol, the newly opened visitor’s center offers an immersive experience of the Capitol’s architecture and history. The center houses several state statues in Emancipation Hall and a museum that chronicles the Capitol’s journey from its cornerstone laying in 1789 by George Washington to the present day. Tickets for the Senate and House galleries are available for purchase. The Library of Congress’ Jefferson Building, situated across the street from the Capitol, stands as the world’s largest repository of books and media. The building’s Renaissance and Classical art collections are truly breathtaking.
These and other notable sites make Capitol Hill an indispensable destination for those visiting Washington, whether for business or leisure!
